Anti-LGBTQ+
Violence and hate against LGBTQ+ communities is often overlooked when talking about extremism. We are working to change this.
As societies around the world have begun recognising the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) communities, a backlash of hate and sometimes violence has been the response. Much of this has come from well known extremist ideologies such as from the far-right or Islamist origins.
We see the patterns of divisiveness and demonization that has impacted other marginalised groups, and want to make sure that hate speech and actions against LGBTQ+ communities are not excluded from the analysis and responses.
ISD’s YouthCAN initiative, founded in Oslo, Norway in 2015, looked beyond the traditional counter extremism framework to include anti-LGBTQ+ action through its series of training workshops, online resources and youth engagement. The resulting campaigns and messaging has helped broaden the perspectives of youth to a wide range of social justice issues.
Through initiatives supported by Google.org and others, such as the £1m Google Innovation Fund (2018) and the €10m Google Impact Challenge on Safety (2019), we have funded projects that have addressed anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes in the UK and Europe. One of them, a project called Trans*Form Youth Action, sought to use theatre, film and education to provide positive counter-narratives to hate based on young trans people’s experiences.
In 2019, ISD published Mapping Hate in France: A Panoramic View of Online Discourse, a data-driven overview of a variety of forms of hateful speech online in France that identified just under 7 million instances of online hateful speech against women; LGBTQ+ communities; people with disabilities; and French Arab communities. This included over 1 million instances of anti-LGBTQ+ hateful speech.
ISD is committed to continuing and expanding its role in ensuring that discrimination, hate, and violence against LGBTQ+ communities is never seen as acceptable.
