The DPL delves into risk-based digital policy

The Digital Policy Lab (DPL) held the third and final webinar in their series on risk-based digital policy responses. This series brought together policymakers, regulators and experts from civil society to discuss systemic risks posed by the design and function of online platforms, such as algorithmic recommendation systems, and how to measure and mitigate them. They discussed different policy initiatives, such as the UK’s Online Safety Bill and the EU’s Digital Services Act.

Previous sessions in March and April 2022, included an introduction into risk assessments and the challenge of balancing user safety and freedom of expression, as well as a session about enforcement and compliance powers of regulators across different legislative initiatives.

Over 50 policymakers and regulators from the Europe Commission, as well as ministries and institutions in 13 member countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Slovakia, Sweden, the UK and the US) attended the sessions. External participants from civil society, academia and ex-industry were invited to provide additional expertise.
