Iran floods global social media with AI content during ongoing conflict
Bret Schafer, ISD Senior Director for Information Operations, joined Fox News to discuss the surge of AI-generated content Iran is deploying amid the ongoing conflict, targeting audiences beyond its domestic borders—particularly across the Middle East—where it appears aimed at sowing fear in the region.
“This is not targeted at a domestic audience,” he said. “The Iranian population is largely shut off from the internet. They want to provoke a sense that Iranian capabilities sort of far extend beyond what we’ve seen so far.”
Bret also noted how difficult it can be for users to sort through the sheer volume of content coming from pro-Iranian social media accounts and state media channels. As he explained, some videos contain subtle indicators of manipulation, such as unnatural camera movements or inconsistencies in how fires and smoke appear. Yet these cues are easy to miss when people are quickly scrolling through social media during their day.
Fox News National Correspondent Bryan Llenas reported that US Central Command pushed back on viral claims circulating online, arguing that Iran’s strategy relies on volume rather than credibility. “Iran’s misinformation campaign isn’t about quality, it’s about quantity,” CENTCOM said, adding that the goal is to “flood the zone” with content in order to create confusion and shape perceptions.
