Over the last few months, US, UK and EU governments began attempting to crackdown on the production and dissemination of sexual deepfakes.

Despite these efforts, researchers recently uncovered that the AI platform Hugging Face can be used to easily create explicit deepfakes. In its discussion of this finding, WIRED spoke to ISD’s Leonie Oehmig.

Leonie explained that unless companies deploy safety mechanisms, many image generation models were trained on sexual images and, as a result, they can generate explicit content. Many face-swapping apps can also produce undressed images of people.

“Some platforms are quite straightforward about the purpose of these apps. But then there’s others that kind of look more innocent—but they actually do offer these functionalities where you’re able to undress a person or where you’re able to do these face swapping functions.”
