The creation and dissemination of deepfake nudes is an increasingly concerning phenomenon, representing one example of technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

A recent La Nación piece discussed this growing threat facing women and girls, citing ISD’s work uncovering the ecosystem supporting the distribution and monetization of explicit deepfakes.

The outlet spoke to ISD’s Leonie Oehmig, who highlighted how accessible and cheap it is to create this harmful content, which can be used for both sexual gratification as well as sextortion. Leonie also highlighted the transnational element of this threat happening on large social media platforms, and its ability to cause victims to withdraw from public life.
