Voters increasingly rely on AI for election questions, raising concerns about information accuracy

Heading into the US midterms, voters are increasingly turning to AI to obtain information about politics and elections.

ISD’s Director of Civic Innovation Max Read spoke to The Hill about this developing phenomenon. Max spoke about the ways in which AI will influence the upcoming elections.

“While people may have and should continue to have … a healthy dose of skepticism about some of the outputs, the reality is that [AI] outputs are going to be playing an increasing role,” Max said. “Both as a primary information source and point of information gathering for voters, but also impacting the information environment in more subtle ways.”

Max also discussed ISD’s recent report on AI chatbot responses to election-related questions, stating that he hopes the findings emphasize the importance of local election officials and campaigns keeping information updated online.
