AI in US campaigns: How foreign adversaries may take advantage, disengaging voters

As the US November elections inch closer and campaigns kick into high gear, concerns around the use of AI and the threats that follow are becoming more apparent in the midst of a “volatile technology landscape that lacks regulation,” writes the Boston Globe. ISD’s Resident Senior Fellow for Digital Integrity, Jiore Craig, spoke to the newspaper about the possibility of foreign interference and how AI could be exploited by bad actors to inundate voters with conflicting information and sow confusion.
“My biggest concern is people being so overwhelmed and finding it so hard to get information that they just throw their hands up. And that’s really where foreign adversaries win, when voters decide they’re going to disengage and not participate in our democracy,” she said.
