ISD’s Head of Research & Policy, Far-right and Hate Movements, Jacob Davey, took part in an expert panel for The Real Story on BBC World Service, where he discussed the dynamics driving the ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy theory into the mainstream.

When asked about the appeal of this theory in Europe and the US, he explains how it adapts to different needs depending on who the ‘other’ is in conversation. “Its appeal for extremists is it plays into wider concerns and wider discourse. And that’s what provides the hook that brings people onboard the conspiracy theory […] its appeal is that it taps into much broader discourses in society about race, about race relations, about immigration”.
