AI content blurs truth in US elections, reinforces biases, finds ISD report

The Washington Post reported on ISD’s findings regarding the impact of AI-generated content on the information ecosystem ahead of the US elections, revealing that many voters struggled to distinguish between real and artificial media. In the analysis of a random sample of 300 posts, ISD found that platforms were failing to label or remove the content even when it was debunked, and that users were failing to correctly identify the content 52% of the time. This dynamic reinforces personal biases, with many users suspecting that opposing political sides use AI to manipulate public perception.

While platforms have sought to bolster false content detection, said Isabelle Frances-Wright, ISD’s Director of Technology and Society, and report co-author, “what we’re now really seeing is a crisis when content is true.”
