Iran war highlights dangers of AI-generated media

AI-generated content is decreasing the ability to distinguish fact from fiction—a particularly pressing issue in the face of breaking news. 

The conflict in Iran offers an example of these dangers caused by the proliferation of AI. ISD’s research examining social media posts around the Iran war was featured by the Associated Press (AP) and subsequently featured by many outlets like ABC News.  

AP highlighted ISD’s finding that roughly two dozen X accounts—many of which with a blue check verification—were circulating AI-generated content. These posts collectively gained more than 1 billion views since the start of the conflict.
