Online spaces now sit at the centre of some extremist networks

Now, more than ever, the online world is playing a central role in extremism.

ISD’s Senior Director of Policy and Research, Milo Comerford, was featured in a recent episode of the award-winning podcast Click Here to discuss this. In the episode, Milo and the guest host unpack the rise of nihilistic violence and the critical role the online environment plays in these communities.

“Over the past 10 years, we have really witnessed the wholesale shift of the extremism threats we face today to centre the online component at the heart of them,” Milo explains. “Online is the ideology.”

Milo also highlighted how these communities thrive on people’s desire for visibility and status.

“Now it’s about participating in an online world that, in many cases, is as real as the offline worlds that motivated people previously.”
