Minnesota shooter’s online trail shows signs of nihilistic violence subculture

As more details emerge about the perpetrator who opened fire at a Minnesota Catholic church—killing two and injuring 17—authorities and the public are searching for a motive.

ISD-US Senior Manager Cody Zoschak spoke to CNN about the shooter’s ideologically confusing online footprint and how it may fit into the emerging subculture of nihilistic violence. He explained that the attacker’s journals and YouTube videos mirrored writings published by the perpetrator of a high school shooting in Nashville earlier this year.

“He was associated with similar online subcultures of nihilistic violence,” Cody said. “He had a very confusing mix of materials in his manifesto, and we generally saw a lot of efforts to misdirect and troll.”
