Isabelle Frances-Wright, Director of Technology and Society at ISD-US, spoke with Tortoise Media’s Sensemaker podcast about a recent uptick in online misogyny following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory. Isabelle explains: “Almost immediately after the election we began to track a number of different misogynistic narratives that we saw a rapid uptick in a 24-hour period starting on November 6th.”

“The narratives really range from what I would say is softer, nonviolent misogyny such as ‘women should get back in the kitchen’ and ‘repeal the 19th amendment’ […] all the way up to the phrase that has now gained a lot of attention, ‘your body, my choice.’”

Isabelle also highlights instances of extremely violent narratives, “going even further than that [there were] calls for rape squads, and some pretty violent and overt calls to rape. Seeing how quickly we saw this type of rhetoric move from online to offline in a period of 24 hours shows just how mainstream this language has become.”
