Increase in public threats caused in part by ‘online echo chambers’

ISD’s Dispatch focusing on threats to political officials was featured in Punchbowl’s Newsletter in their discussion of the troubling trend of violent threats being levied against public figures. Punchbowl spoke to ISD CEO Sasha Havlicek, who described how social media has played a role in this development by creating “echo chambers that have emerged as a result of the algorithmic distortions.”

Katherine Keneally, ISD director of threat analysis & prevention, also spoke to the outlet about the difficulties in determining credible threats.

“It’s seemingly becoming more random,” Katherine explained. “Finding the needle in the haystack is becoming much more difficult because the haystack is getting bigger and bigger.”

ISD’s report was also featured in Punchbowl’s podcast The Daily Punch.
