Canada’s local elections face growing foreign interference risks

Foreign interference threats to Canadian democracy are intensifying with Alberta’s upcoming referendum on October 19 already emerging as a potential target.

David Salvo, Managing Director for Transatlantic Policy and Programming at ISD-US, together with Madeleine Case of Toronto Metropolitan University, warn that election-management bodies across Canada may lack the capacity, information-sharing mechanisms and legal clarity needed to respond to these growing risks in their joint opinion piece for The Globe and Mail.

“As long as divisive wedge issues like separatism percolate in Canadian politics and public debate, there will be opportunities for malign foreign actors to undermine the strength and resilience of Canadian democracy,” warn David and Madeleine.
