Anti-migrant sentiment bridges divide between nationalist and loyalist communities in Ireland
Ethnonationalist groups in Ireland and Northern Irish Loyalist communities—two historically unaligned groups—have found common ground in their anti-migrant views. Several news outlets covered ISD’s recent Dispatch on this shift, which appear to be helping override “older sectarian fault lines.”
This ideological convergence led to close collaboration between the two groups at recent anti-migrant protests in Ballymena (Northern Ireland) and Limerick (Ireland). Far-right groups have used these protests to promote fringe agendas like an impending “cultural war.”
ISD Hate and Extremism Analyst and author of the report Zoe Manzi spoke to several outlets on the significance of this collaboration. In conversation with The Journal, she said: “It’s a major shift that shows old ideological lines are breaking down, replaced by shared grievances that are driving a growing and increasingly visible anti-migrant movement across the island.”
