ISD’s Moustafa Ayad on AI’s role in enhancing Islamic State propaganda and operational security

New AI technology has taken society by storm—including the world of terrorist organizations.

ISD’s Executive Director for AMEA, Moustafa Ayad, outlines AI’s growing role in amplifying Islamic State propaganda and operational security in The Guardian. He explains how supporters can now turn news bulletins into audio, create photo arrays, and use tools like encrypted voice modulators to evade detection.

“A lot of what AI is doing is enabling what’s already there,” he said. “It’s also supporting their capacity in terms of propaganda and dissemination – it’s a key part of that.”

AI’s utility in terrorist organizations extends beyond propaganda, Moustafa explains it “can assist with them further cloaking and enhancing their opsec [operational security].”
