How citizen journalists fell foul of anti-migrant rioters in Southampton

During the recent wave of anti-migrant protests and riots in cities such as Southampton, ‘auditors’ who filmed the events played a key role in shaping how they were perceived. These self-described ‘citizen journalists’ often claim to offer an independent view despite supporting protesters.

Sid Venkataramakrishnan, editorial manager and analyst at ISD UK, spoke to the BBC’s Media Show about how these ‘auditors’ have become a fixture of anti-migrant protests in the UK, frequently targeting buildings housing asylum seekers.

He also discussed why some protesters and rioters have come to view auditors with suspicion after footage shot by one citizen journalist helped lead to arrests over the violence in Southampton.
