Telegram channels a key part of nonconsensual imagery ecosystem

Telegram has become a hub for sharing deepfake nudes, marking another example of AI tools being used to harm women. 

Anne Craanen, ISD’s senior research and policy manager, spoke to The Guardian about how Telegram channels are the centerpiece of a broader ecosystem dedicated to creating and disseminating nonconsensual intimate images. 

While Telegram allows users to evade controls of larger platforms and share tips on generating nonconsensual intimate images, Anne explains how the community it fosters is also a large element of this phenomenon. 

“The dissemination of celebration of this material is another part,” Anne explained. “That circulating it with other men and boasting about it, and that celebration aspect, is also really important. It really shows the misogynistic undertones of it. They’re trying to punish women or silence women.”
