ISD signs a letter calling on Senate leaders to pass three bills aimed at protecting federal elections from deceptive AI-generated content

27/06/2024

On 27 June 2024, ISD along with 57 other organizations sent a letter to Majority Leader Charles Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling for Senate leadership to bring three bipartisan bills on AI and elections to the Senate Rules Committee’s floor for a vote.

These bills – S. 2770. Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act, S. 3875. AI Transparency in Elections Act, and S. 3897. Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act – would provide valuable safeguards against the growing threat of deceptive AI-generated content and misinformation ahead of federal elections.

“Our nation needs AI and elections safeguards in place before our federal elections this fall if possible. Even in these early days, we have already seen deceptive deepfakes targeting President Biden and former President Trump,” the letter reads. “In the absence of clear law, there is every reason to fear deepfakes may impact the results of close elections, enable candidates to deny the legitimacy of authentic content, sow confusion and doubt and seriously deepen political alienation.”

The full sign-on letter is available here.
