ISD report results in disruption of threat to Washington school

An ISD report from our threat detection team was at the heart of an investigation that stopped a potential school shooting.

The News Tribune’s recent article revealed that the investigation into a Pierce County 13-year-old who recently pled guilty to felony charges related to a school shooting threat was initiated by an ISD report. In recent legal filings, the deputy prosecuting attorney Sean Plunkett explained that the county’s investigation began with a report on the teen’s social media activity compiled by ISD.

“According to the report, [the teen] has shared multiple photographs of himself holding firearms while dressed as past school shooters at least six times since June of 2025 and made several comments suggesting his desire to carry out his own attack,” Plunkett wrote in a brief ahead of sentencing.

ISD’s report came out of the real-time threat detection work our team conducts. The team produces frequent reports on topics ranging from TCC and 764 to domestic and international extremism, sharing actionable findings with relevant stakeholders, such as local law enforcement, in an effort to prevent harms before they occur.

Following ISD’s report, the Sheriff’s Office searched the teen’s home and found 22 firearms. Last Wednesday, he pled guilty to attempted threat to bomb or injure property and other offenses and was sentenced to 90 days in detention, which he served, along with nine months of probation, including court-ordered behavioral treatment.
