AI blurs reality amid Iran-Israel conflict

ISD’s Director of Technology and Safety, Isabelle Frances-Wright, was featured in a recent NPR piece on AI-generated content that spread during the Iran-Israel conflict.

Isabelle explained that the proliferation of increasingly advanced AI-generated content is blurring the line between fact and fiction for many—an issue that becomes especially concerning during wartime.

Following Israel’s surprise airstrikes on Iran, an AI-generated video of drone footage depicting a bombed-out airport circulated online. Hundreds of users on X turned to the site’s AI chat bot Grok with a simple but significant question: Is this real?

“This is potentially the worst I have seen the information environment in the last two years,” said Isabelle. “I can only imagine what it feels like [for] the average social media user to be in these feeds.”
