The ‘Big Lie’, an umbrella narrative for modern-day election disinformation

ISD’s Head of Digital Integrity, Jiore Craig, features in this article for Grid News commenting on the evolution of election misinformation in modern political campaigns. While mis- and disinformation about election day details, ID requirements and narratives to discourage voters are nothing new, the 2020 ‘Big Lie’ wrapped all of those elements under one “umbrella narrative.”

“Disinformation about elections and voting has always been a stand-alone category even before 2020,” Jiore said. “But having the offline champions that exist in Donald Trump and other candidates for office and election officials has really made this have staying power.”
