Community notes—a user-powered fact-checking system on X—briefly vanished from users’ feeds earlier this year. ISD’s Senior Analyst Aoife Gallagher spoke to The Journal about the tool’s shortcomings, as well as its essential role when functioning properly.

Aoife explains that Community Notes is vulnerable to manipulation and many corrections aren’t published because of a lack of consensus among contributors. Still, she emphasised that the platform is better with it than without it.

“When it [Community Notes] works, it has been found to be useful,” Aoife said. “Its absence makes users of the platform even more vulnerable to consuming falsehoods.”
