CNN: Paula-Charlotte Matlach on how global crises have fuelled the rise of far-right parties

Paula-Charlotte Matlach, an analyst at ISD Germany, was featured in CNN explaining how economic challenges and political discontent fueled the rise of far-right parties like Germany’s AfD. She notes that crises such as the 2008 financial crash, the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine have driven up the cost of living and fostered “widespread discontent with the ‘political establishment.’”

Paula also highlighted how the AfD has successfully framed climate policies as elitist, a strategy mirrored by far-right parties in countries like Italy, the US, Brazil and Australia. “This has made achieving global climate goals more difficult,” she said.
