US bill banning TikTok strikes debate about online safety, freedom of speech and national security
In April, the US Senate approved a bill banning TikTok from country-wide app stores starting 19 January 2025 unless it’s parent company, ByteDance, finds a US-based buyer.
The Spanish newspaper El Mundo featured ISD commentary about this bill and how it fits within the broader debate of online safety, freedom of speech and national security.
“Instead of banning a singular platform, Congress should work to pass comprehensive federal data privacy legislation that protects online users and limits the ability of the platforms and other data brokers to collect and sell users’ data,” ISD told El Mundo.
