The 1972 Munich Olympic Games attack informs current counter-terrorism efforts

In a new documentary by the German outlet ZDF about the attack at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Julia Ebner analyses the failures of the German intelligence and security agencies and compares them to terror and counter-terror scenarios in today’s world.

Julia also discusses the extent to which the 1972 attacks inspired subsequent terrorist incidents and how the aftermath helped improve counter-terrorism efforts by Germany and elsewhere.

“The Munich massacre became a highly symbolic event, it was the first time that terrorism generated so much media attention on an international level. As such, it also inspired the next generations of terror organisations and networks in their tactics,” Julia said.
