Jordan Reimer on disrupting violent extremist paths with a “public health approach”

Jordan Reimer, the Strong Cities Network’s Senior Manager for North America, is quoted in Christian Science Monitor discussing the advantages of thepublic health approach to preventing extremism in the US. In a previous Explainer for ISD, Jordan wrote that the public health model is a comprehensive approach to preventing targeted violence” focusing on identifying indicative behaviors rather than isolating specific communities or ideologies. He further explained that targeted violence can arise in any susceptible individual and is often influenced by their environment, whether it be familial, communal, physical, or online.

Jordan, a former intelligence analyst for the New York Police Department, tells Christian Science Monitor that individuals can find a sense of purpose and community connecting with violent extremists, particularly people experiencing personal grievances or major stress.

It “gives them an understanding of the world,” he said. However, he explains, grassroots prevention efforts can provide off-ramps for individuals drawn to violent extremism. Jordan adds that “once you build a healthy, resilient community” the risk of individuals turning to extremism is reduced.
