Following the recent attack on Berlin’s Christopher Street Day Pride festival, ISD’s Jakob Guhl spoke to RBB’s radio3 about how Islamist extremists target the queer community, and where that targeting overlaps with the extreme right.

Islamist extremists target queer people primarily because of a rigid, literalist interpretation of religion that casts LGBTQ+ identities and relationships as sinful.

The extreme right targets queer people too, Guhl notes, drawing connections between the two as he points to recent attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

“There are interactions between right-wing extremists and Islamist extremists, and they reinforce each other in the conviction they essentially share: that peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims in Western societies is actually undesirable, but also that conflict there is inevitable.”
