Tim Squirrell spoke to Al Jazeera’s Inside Story on World Press Freedom Day, discussing the threats of disinformation and propaganda in the online space.

Joined by a Ukrainian journalist and a representative from Reporters Without Borders, Tim highlighted the need for greater data transparency from tech companies, as well as the urgency of scrutinising the underlying business models of social media platforms rather than relying on piecemeal content moderation approaches.

He also called for policymakers and others to take into account the demand for disinformation as well as supply, noting that trust in institutions and authorities is constantly being eroded, resulting in disillusioned populations with a desire for answers.
