ISD’s Katherine Keneally speaks to BNN Bloomberg about extremist content online

Katherine Keneally, Director of Threat Analysis and Prevention for ISD US, spoke to BNN Bloomberg about how reduced content moderation on social media sites enables extremism to grow. The article dives into how federal agencies, such as the FBI, have scaled back efforts to identify and remove extremist content, while social media sites are moving away from third party fact-checking systems.

“We don’t have a national policy that requires social media firms to do anything about extremists, so a lot of investigating falls on organizations like ours and law enforcement,” Katherine explained.

“If investment in this area slows down, either financially or in terms of manpower, that could create a very real security threat.”
