Highlighting ISD research on AI chatbots and radicalisation risks
A recent post by the Council on Technology and Social Cohesion highlighted findings from ISD’s new report, Radicalisation in Closed Loops: Risks and Intervention Opportunities with AI Chatbots and Companions.
The piece examines how conversational AI chatbots respond when users shift from curiosity and grievances to stronger extremist beliefs, drawing on ISD’s research into chatbot responses to antisemitism, misogyny and anti-migrant hate.
It notes that the results from different systems vary from reinforcing the user’s worldview to disengaging or offering a generic refusal. The post also highlights ISD’s recommendations for stronger safety testing, regulation and safeguards for companion-style AI systems.
