‘Germanic New Medicine’ spreads dangerously on Telegram, ISD finds

Leonie Oehmig

The so-called ‘Germanic New Medicine’ (GNM) is a pseudoscientific movement that rejects established medical treatments, falsely claiming that diseases are caused by unresolved emotional conflicts. Between 80 and 500 deaths have been linked to this belief system.

German outlet Der Spiegel published an exclusive article on ISD’s new study examining how this ideology spreads on Telegram.

The report, authored by ISD analyst Leonie Oehmig, finds that GNM-related channels and groups are embedded in broader networks where far-right ideologies and conspiracy narratives are also shared.

Der Spiegel highlights the risks posed by the movement, underscoring ISD’s findings on the significant potential for these narratives to spread widely. The article also notes Leonie’s discovery that several GNM actors monetise the ideology through paid services, including an AI-powered chatbot that disseminates pseudomedical misinformation.

It is often key figures within the movement driving these initiatives, Leonie told Der Spiegel.
