AI-generated videos of Hurricane Melissa undermine public safety

As Hurricane Melissa approached Jamaica last week, misleading and AI-generated videos of the storm flooded social media platforms, endangering those in its path. Forbes’ recent article looks at how artificial intelligence-generated content was undermining the dissemination of accurate safety information during the disaster. This instance is not the first time natural disasters have prompted a spread of false information. Forbes cites ISD’s research on last year’s Hurricane Helene, which found 33 posts on X spreading claims later debunked by FEMA, collectively reaching more than 160 million views.
