Ill Advice: A Case Study in Facebook’s Failure to Tackle COVID-19 Disinformation

This report aims to examine Facebook’s efforts at tackling false information related to COVID-19 and vaccines on its platform by analysing the presence of a group called the World Doctors Alliance, whose members have spread various problematic, false and conspiratorial claims about the pandemic since March 2020.

ISD researchers examined World Doctors Alliance content in four different languages – English, German, Spanish and Arabic – and explored the role that Facebook’s fact-checking program plays in stopping false information being spread by the group’s 12 key members. Researchers also analysed the growth of Facebook pages associated with the World Doctors Alliance or its members since January 2020.

The results of this investigation show that Facebook is failing in its commitment to prohibit and remove false claims about COVID-19. The report also exposes major gaps in the efficacy of Facebook’s fact-checking program in languages outside of English and shows that the platform is failing to use the knowledge of these fact-checking organisations to take meaningful action against the group. This issue is not limited to Facebook and further similar research could be carried out into this problem across other social media platforms.

Pulling Back the Curtain: An Exploration of YouTube’s Recommendation Algorithm

This is the executive summary of ISD’s Pulling Back the Curtain series which explores different aspects of YouTube’s recommendation algorithm. The series consists of four separate investigations examining the recommendations sent to eight U.S.-based YouTube accounts registered with varying ages, genders, and interests over one month. This report summarizes the findings across all four investigations and provides an overview of the project and platform policy recommendations.
