The Guardian interviews Jared Holt about popularity of the alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter
Jared Holt, Senior Research Analyst at ISD, spoke to The Guardian about the online support Luigi Mangione, the alleged murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has received. Since the murder, Mangione has garnered backing not only from fringe groups but also from mainstream voices. “I have been alarmed by the overwhelming amount of celebration I’ve seen online from people who are applauding what is fundamentally an act of vigilante violence,” Jared said.
“Many people have real and valid reasons to despise health insurance companies and corporate greed, but I am concerned that so many people seem to think shooting someone dead in the street is a valid response to that anger,” he added.
Although much is still unknown about the alleged shooter, Jared believes the six months before the shooting, during which Mangione wasn’t active online, may provide answers. “We won’t truly know what might have tipped the scales for Mangione until his life during those last six months comes into better focus,” said Jared.
