State of US extremism could “change really quickly” in the run-up to the 2024 general elections

The Proud Boys’ leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in jail for his role in the January 6th Capitol riots. Despite multiple sentences and charges against participants in the J6 insurrection, extremist groups continue to be active throughout the country. Although, not in the same way. In early September, a small gathering of neo-Nazis in Orlando, Florida, resulted in zero arrests. ISD Senior Research Manager Jared Holt spoke to Sky News  how this could “change really quickly” in the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections.

“I think there is definitely a buzzing energy that the ‘right’ person whether it is Trump, DeSantis or somebody else entirely, if they are able to pick that up things could change really quickly,” Jared said.
