Officials react to online chatter of Trump protest ahead of former president’s arraignment in NY

Online activity has spiked ahead of Donald Trump’s arraignment this Tuesday among pro-Trump circles calling for a protest in New York, but US officials say it is “disorganized, sporadic and lacks the coherent planning that defined the lead-up to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol,” according to CNN.

ISD recently published a Dispatch on three narratives we’ve observed among pro-Trump online communities that seems to be dissuading mobilization on behalf of the former president. Senior Research Manager, Katherine Keneally, spoke to CNN about one of those narratives playing out online at this time where supporters are expressing fear of being arrested similarly to how Jan 6 rioters were.

“Leading up to Tuesday, we will be looking for any new narratives surrounding the indictment that mobilize individuals to offline action, indicators that supporters are organizing (particularly any extremist groups), and content suggestive of credible threats,” Keneally told CNN.
