ISD’s Max Read speaks to NPR about acts of arson targeting ballot boxes in Washington and Oregon

Max Read, Senior Research Manager at ISD, spoke with NPR after ballot boxes in Washington and Oregon were targeted by arson just days before the 2024 U.S. election. During the conversation, Max emphasized that ballot boxes have been the target of conspiracy theorists since the 2020 election.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions and frankly, just lies about what security measures are in place, not only on the ballot drop boxes, but on the whole system of election vote tabulation and certification,” Max told NPR.

He explained that ballot boxes are regularly under video surveillance, and that many of them are equipped with fire suppressants. He also reminded individuals that “people should not allow these isolated incidents to undermine their trust in these voting methods, which are generally extremely secure.”
