ISD’s Jiore Craig speaks with KCBS Radio about the surge in online misogyny following Trump’s victory

Jiore Craig, a Resident Senior Fellow at ISD, joined KCBS Radio’s Bay Area All Local to discuss the recent surge in online misogynistic rhetoric following the US election. In the episode, Jiore shared how ISD discovered “a 4000% increase in mentions of ‘your body, my choice’ and we saw an increase of other phrases such as, ‘get back in the kitchen’ and ‘repeal the 19th’.” She attributes much of this to a group effort by the Manosphere, a network of interconnected misogynistic communities, to reduce women to second-class citizens.

Jiore offered three ways to combat the spread of misogyny online: acknowledging the vast amount of information that moves online, implementing safeguards in the tech sphere, and encouraging male leadership to call out misogyny and push against it. According to Jiore: “If there is not someone somewhere pushing back against these cultural norms women will experience this in the real world.”
