ISD’s Jennie King speaks to Mother Jones about climate denialism accounts on X

Jennie King, Director of Climate Research and Policy at ISD, discusses an X account that rapidly gained notoriety for sharing climate denialism claims. “The story is indicative of various online trends, including the diversity of actors who are piggybacking on the climate crisis as a way to generate both clout and revenue,” Jennie explained. 

In 2023, the account experienced a meteoric rise during an 18-month period. “They had gone from having 322 followers to 250,000 followers. This morning they’re at 577,000,” Jennie noted. “That is a 1.7-thousand-fold increase.” Despite the large following, Jennie highlights there are very few accounts that focus on spreading climate denialism claims: “It’s a tiny minority of accounts who are really driving this ecosystem. They […] create the impression of critical mass.”
