Disinformation campaigns take advantage of Hurricanes Milton and Helene

Salon featured ISD’s report on Russian propaganda campaigns exploiting Hurricanes Milton and Helene to spread disinformation in a recent article. In the write-up, Salon highlights how both Russian campaigns and politicians have used the hurricanes as launching pads for right-wing conspiracy theories. The article focuses on one right-wing pundit who attributes the hurricanes to abortion while rejecting climate change. 

The ISD report found that social media accounts linked to Russian state-affiliated media were spreading misinformation about the hurricane, including claims that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is actively trying to harm ordinary Americans.
