Discord, a common denominator in various high-profile incidents of extremism

While not all Discord users are extremists, many extremists rely on the messaging app to openly communicate in a private, closed group manner. When looking at various high-profile incidents, Discord comes up again and again connected in various ways. USA Today drew on ISD’s research on right-wing extremism among gamers on Discord. In our findings, we found that the app, popular among gamers, “primarily acts as a hub for extreme right-wing socialising and community building,” and “provides a safe space for users to share ideological material and explore extremist movements.”
