Dorset Prevent Conference

At this conference, ISD was able to talk about how our Education programmes help young people to talk safely and confidently about extremism with their teachers through Extreme Dialogue, and how our Be Internet Citizens, Young Digital Leaders, and Digital Resilience units of work have reached over 75,000 young people in England, Wales, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, and Romania.

Strong Cities Network Global Summit 2018

Date: 10-12 July 2018

The SCN 2018 Summit will provide a unique forum for policy makers, practitioners, academia and other specialists to connect and develop region-specific, best-practice approaches to countering and preventing violent extremism. The Summit will deliver training workshops for local practitioners, showcase local projects and provide networking opportunities with an Asia-Pacific focus.

Workshops and training will focus on a range of key issues including: individual interventions; multiculturalism and integration within cities; political communications around countering violent extremism; youth engagement in preventing and countering violent extremism; gender and violence; local action planning; new models for multi-agency cooperation; global-local integration; and how to harness the private sector and technology to tackle polarisation and violent extremism. The Summit includes additional side events for mayoral and national government representatives.

Be Internet Citizens: Community Training Workshop

Google and YouTube want a safe and exciting web where young people are empowered to be creative, express themselves and experience a sense of belonging as digital citizens. Be Internet Citizens has been designed to teach teenagers media literacy, critical thinking and digital citizenship skills. It aims to provide a strong foundation for young people to express their identities, make a social impact, be resilient as well as active citizens online sharing their positive voices and stories.

The workshop is aimed at youth workers, local community educators, youth leaders, charities and any NGOs working with young people. Speakers include the local MP, a panel of influencers, YouTubers, and leaders, working to empower young people with life skills online and offline.

OCCI Berlin workshop

OCCI Mini-Hackathon

Date: 27 June 2018

The hackathon aims to produce a multi-partnered, Pan-European, decentralized civil society-led campaign that promotes a positive and unified message on World Humanitarian Day (August 19th), with support from participating technology companies. The campaign, rather than focusing on challenging hate and prejudice, will focus on celebrating unity and compassion.

Digital Citizenship: How can we empower young people to become digital leaders?

We’re working with Google to ensure that young people learn can create a fun, positive, and vibrant community online. Workshop on Building Resiliency in Cities and Long-Term Prevention Solutions through Public-Private Partnerships

YouthCAN/SCN Workshop

Date: 12-14 May 2018

This three-day workshop brought together Strong Cities Prevention Network members with youth between the ages of 18 and 24 from three cities across Lebanon: Tripoli, Saida and Majdal Anjar. For the first two days of the lab, 29 youth participants received training on the planning of effective campaigns taking on issues faced by youth in their local communities. On the third day, participants were joined by practitioners from the SCN prevention networks including municipal leaders, teachers and representatives of civil society organisations for sessions on youth engagement and the role of youth as active contributors to conflict prevention.

Extreme Dialogue Sixth Former Training

Date: 5 May 2018

Our expert facilitators trained Sixth Formers on how best to use our films and supporting educational resources to start challenging but necessary conversations with young people about extremism. Using films produced by ISD and the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Foundation that tell the stories of those affected by extremism, teachers will now be able to fulfil the Prevent duty in a proactive and engaging way.

Harmful Speech Workshop: At the Intersection of Algorithms and Human Behaviour

Date: 29-30 June 2017

This workshop will broadly explore harmful speech online as it is affected by the intersection of algorithms and humans, and to create networks and relationships among stakeholders at this nexus. Findings from the sessions will help shape outputs for the event, which could include various written pieces, mechanisms for network building and continued knowledge sharing across sectors, and avenues for future collaboration amongst attendees.

Strong Cities Network Global Summit 2016

Date: 11-12 May 2016

The SCN Global Summit brought together more than 200 delegates representing 62 cities and 39 countries to share knowledge and experiences around best practice in countering violent extremism at the local level.

The summit opened with a welcome from Menderes Türel, Mayor of Antalya, followed by a keynote from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, lending his country’s full support to SCN and highlighting the importance of increased cooperation not just between countries but between cities in countering extremism. He was joined by the Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş.

Highlighting the need for local efforts to counter violent extremism, H.E. Governor Hassan Ali Joho (Mombasa), Minister Ranjit Patil (Maharashtra/ Mumbai), Lord Mayor Frank Jensen (Copenhagen) and Andy Berke (Chattanooga) spoke about their work in safeguarding communities from violent extremism.

YouthCAN Innovation Lab

Date: 11-13 February 2016

ISD, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, hosted the first Commonwealth YouthCAN innovation lab in Kigali, Rwanda, from February 11-13th, bringing together over 35 changemakers from around the region. YouthCAN, founded in June 2015 at the Youth CVE Summit in Oslo, Norway, is a global network that exists to ensure civil society efforts in countering violent extremism are the best they can be. The network now has well over 300 active members worldwide.

At the Commonwealth YouthCAN lab in Kigali, ISD brought together youth-activists, creatives, athletes and social media representatives for counter-narrative training and content creation to push back against hate, extremism, and violence. This was the first of many labs being planned in 2016 for YouthCAN in Europe and the Commonwealth.
